Catch a Glimpse of the Sun

Reading Time: 2 min

Looking up at the blue morning sky, I noticed the clouds. It was a fabulous sight to behold. Dark clouds dotted the sky, but the sun shone brightly behind the clouds. The dazzling sun behind the clouds gave the clouds a glowing silver lining.

In life, we often face those dark and gloomy clouds. They can be those difficult situations and those anxious fears that cripple us. They can make our outlook dreary and our future depressing. So what can we do when we face those moments of gloom and doom. We can gain insight from Paul’s letter to the Romans, Chapter 8:28, he writes, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”.

There are three life lessons we can learn from this portion of Scripture.

Firstly, Lean on God. The first portion of this verse says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good.” We need to trust God during difficult times, even when the future looks bleak. Can we trust Him to work out things for our good? One good way to lean on Him is through His Word. Reminding ourselves daily about His promises and meditating on His Word is a great way to lean on God.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

Secondly, Love for God. The next portion of the Scripture says, “…God works for the good of those who love Him”. To love God means to be in an intimate relationship with Him. We take pleasure in worshipping Him and obeying His commandments. We do it because we ‘love to’ and not because we ‘have to’, which is a big difference! A great way to begin our love for God is understanding that He first loved us.

We love because He first loved us.

1 John 4:19

Thirdly, Live for God. The last portion of this verse says, “…who have been called according to his purpose’. Each of us has a unique purpose. God wants us to accomplish that purpose for which He created us. While going through difficult situations, we can inspire someone else. We can be a walking testimony to trust in God even when things are difficult.

For to me to live is Christ

Phil 1:21a

The promise of Romans 8:28 that God works all things for good does not mean that everything that happens to us by itself is favourable – a terminal illness, the death of a loved one or a job loss. Instead, it is a promise that God will be able to work it all together for our good.

Today, if you are looking up at gloomy clouds, know that the sun shines brightly behind them and know the Son can turn those dark clouds into showers of blessings. Until then, keep looking out for those silver linings.
