Yes, Easter eggs were what struck me about Easter. Who would not remember those tasty and colourful little egg-shaped confectionaries handed over to children on Easter day? Kids looked forward to an Easter egg because when their tiny hands broke the shell, they would be in for a surprise, for inside the candy shell were more candy of different colours, shapes and sizes. The excitement and the wonder made Easter Special. And yes, as a child, Easter eggs were what struck me about Easter until I grew up and realised that Easter or Resurrection Day is far more significant than Easter eggs.
Why does the Resurrection Day matter?
The Resurrection Reveals that Christ is Lord
Many people face near-death experiences. They temporarily “die” and are resuscitated later. But these people, even after they come back to life, they eventually face death. But Jesus’ death and resurrection were far different and unique. Firstly, Jesus predicted His death and resurrection. Secondly, Jesus’ did not eventually die; instead, he ascended into heaven. In the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans, he writes, “He (Christ) was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord“.
The Resurrection Reveals God’s Love & Forgiveness
Why did Jesus Christ undergo an excruciating crucifixion? Why did He resurrect? Christ demonstrates His unconditional love for us. Paul writes, “God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” The resurrection also reveals to us God’s power to forgive. “And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.”.
The Resurrection Reveals that Death is not the End
The growing crises worldwide, headlines about the pandemic, invasion and death give us the impression that death is not too far away. Woody Allen, the Movie Director, mentioned, “I am not afraid of death. I just don’t want to be there when it happens”. But Christ’s Resurrection and His victory over death help us overcome our fears of it. Paul writes, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ“
Yes, the Resurrection is more than easter eggs. As Bill Gaither, the Singer and Songwriter, would sing…
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth a living just because He lives.
